Norbert Cyrus studied Social and Cultural Anthropology, Sociology and Philosophy. He received his PhD 2008 from Carl-von-Ossietzky-University for his analysis of contemporary processes of labour migration from Poland to Germany. After employments at University Oldenburg, Hamburg Institute for Social Research (HIS) and University Bremen he was a research associate at the European University Viadrina from 2017 to 2019, where he represented the Chair of Cultural and Social Anthropology in the winter semester 2019/20. Since 2022 he works for the EU-funded project MIrreM (Measuring Irregular Migration and Related Policies) at the University Osnabrück. He worked as expert for International Organisations (ILO, Worldbank) and national institutions (e.g. Federal Ministry for Labour, Federal Expert Commission for Migration) and civil organisations (e.g. Diakonie Hamburg, German Trade Union DGB). His research topics include temporary labour migration, civic participation of immigrants, border complexity, anti-trafficking measures, policy design and measures for the rational management of (irregular) migration.
