Johannes Kleinmann studied history and economics at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg i.Br. at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and at the Johannes Gutenberg-University in Mainz.

Since 2020, he is a research assistant at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder), where he is conducting research on gendered narratives and their socio-economic consequences during the long period of transformation in Poland between 1980 and 2004. Since 2021, Johannes Kleinmann is also a PhD student at the University of Vienna as part of a Cotutelle de thèse. His general research interest lies in contemporary Polish history, 20th century European history, as well as economic and social policy.

In addition to his work at Viadrina, Johannes Kleinmann is active in the German Association for Eastern European Studies (DGO). Since 2021, he has headed the Young DGO, an association of all members under the age of 35 within the DGO.
