Peter Polak-Springer uzyskał tytuł doktora w historii nowożytnej na Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ, USA). Jego badania były finansowane przez fundacje Fulbright Hayes, Social Science Research Council, Berlin Program (Freie Universität Berlin). Był stypendystą Robert Bosch Tutor Fellow na Europa Universität Viadrina. Po dokończenia postdoka od fundacjii, American Council of Learned Societies i Mellon Foundation, wykładał w języku angielskim i arabskim na Uniwersytecie Katarskim, i w tematykach obejmujące współczesną historię Europy, XX-wieczną Europę i historię świata, Europę i Bliski Wschód, a także historię Zatoki Perskiej.

Jest historykiem interdyscyplinarnym i porównawczym, którego praca koncentruje się na transnacjonalizmie i polityce kulturalnej na pograniczach i spornych przestrzeniach w Europie i na Bliskim Wschodzie w XX wieku. Wśród jego opublikowanych badań znajduje się monografia na temat polityki nacjonalizacji i tożsamości na niemiecko-polskim spornym pograniczu Górnego Śląska, 1918-1967, a także artykuły i rozdziały dotyczące takich kwestii, jak polityka naftowa, granice i sporne przestrzenie w Zatoce Perskiej, oraz religijność i nacjonalizm w międzywojennej Palestynie i Polsce. Inne tematyki, na które publikował, to obejmują spotkania prasy palestyńskiej z antysemityzmem w Europie lat 30. XX wieku, syryjscy uchodźcy w Niemczech, a także kultura historyczna i pamięć w Zatoce Perskiej.
